A performance of a river that passes through the spine – a carrier and bodily archive of desire, un/forgetting language, and non/belonging. The work is a part of an ongoing research project on emotional accumulation within sugar, sweet, and honeyed objects that passes through, along, and with the post-soviet body. Somewhere in this movement of passing I have forgotten my mother tongue, and in another movement of passing her family has forgotten their name. Geographically speaking the river leads to my village and if you keep walking then to my hometown. The water pulls one in the direction of desires and rejections. And when the river runs through the spine it speaks through the fragmentation of narratives, failure of language, and bodily memories of lost words.”Sweet River Motherland” is a chapter in an ongoing research project on sugar and sweetness within the framework of Soviet/Russian colonialism.
